So, we’re in the midst of February, pummeled by snow and expecting more to come. Standing in the line at the grocery store, all I’ve heard anyone talking about is the next time we are expecting snow. I love Nova Scotia for this. We all understand our common ground: the weather; everyone groggily stepping outside to shovel their driveways smiling and waving to their neighbors, I love it! Well Halifax, I have something to add to our roster of conversation! How about “That great dance show I saw the other night”?
Take a look at the menu on offer…choose one two or all three!
Live Art Dance productions will be presenting Ballet Jazz de Montreal this Valentine’s day; the perfect alternative to dinner and a movie, how about a night out watching a live production of the world renowned dance company from Montreal. Known for it’s exploration of contemporary and innovative work while paying homage to the classical ballet aesthetic, the group will be stopping off as part of their world tour for one night only. With 3 choreographies in their repertoire the well rounded show is sure to treat everyone! O Balcao de Amor will transport you to the world of Caribbean Dance with it’s Cuban Mambo Music inspired work by Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili. Closer is perfectly suited for Valentine’s day with a look at the negative space and tension inherent in relationships set to a soundtrack by Philip Glass by Benjamin Milliepied. Finally Kosmos enters the realm of humanity and their interactions in the city environment. Choreographed by Andonis Foniadakis the work derives its inspiration from the “Urban Frenzy”.
This Saturday and Sunday the Halifax Dance community will switch gears with Kinetic Studio offering audiences a chance to glimpse some “First Ideas” by local talent. The casual atmosphere offers a chance to discuss the artistic process with the choreographers on Saturday night. 7 works will reveal various themes ranging from the mysterious disappearance of Amelia Earhart, female archetypes and social constructs, cognitive dissonance and political behaviour. An assortment of themes will keep you guessing from one piece to the next; showing off the diversity in approaches to creation by the featured choreographers. As it is a first showing, you’ll see raw material offering the exciting opportunity to engage with the endless possibilities in the future developments of the works. An affordable option, the show is pay what you can, so come early to secure a good seat.
The following weekend we’re treated to the polished works performed by the city’s beloved contemporary company Mocean Dance .
“Double Bill” celebrates the Company’s most recent achievement. Winning The Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Masterworks Arts Award at the 2016 Arts Nova Scotia Gala, Canvas 5 X 5 was described as the “best dance to come out this province”. For those who haven’t seen it (myself included) or for those who are anxious to see it again the Company will remount the piece set to Celtic Music and employing massive pieces of Canvas on February 23 &24th at The Alderney Landing Theatre. Complimenting this work will be Sable Island a celebration of the mysterious island off our coast. The physicality in this piece is breathtaking as dancers embody the wild horses, history and landscape characterized by the reality and folklore surrounding the Island. The first work choreographed by Tedd Robinson based out of Ottawa, the second by Serge Bennathan out of Vancouver, the show highlights the National respect the Company has earned over its 15 years long career.
An exciting month for dance in Halifax, these shows will surely keep your mind off of the snowy drifts outside. Hope to see you there!
